We follow a tried and tested approach to the development of our models, both traditional financial models and data models, to ensure they make the intended impact on your business.
While the delivery format and depth of the review may be different for a financial model audit and commercial review, our approach to ensuring a high quality product remains consistent.
Financial models are important tools used in the financial decision making processes of many businesses. The quality of a financial model could therefore be the difference between a good and a bad decision.
Example financial models include:
Why choose SolvIRR to develop your financial model?
We have over 18 years of experience delivering financial models. This experience enables us to design and develop financial models that are robust, flexible and usable.
Our experience dictates that understanding and defining your requirements upfront is vital to the efficiency and effectiveness of the development process. As such, we commence all work with a scoping workshop to understand and define your requirements, ensuring that the financial model developed meets your needs and helps improve your financial decision making.
Traditional financial models are generally created as stand-alone tools using a limited amount of data that can be easily handled by Microsoft Excel.
In a world which now seems to have endless amounts of data, our clients are increasingly asking for financial models to incorporate and analyse larger amounts of data and this requires a different solution.
Data models differ from traditional financial models in the way they are developed and the way in which they pull in the data. A traditional financial model will generally include all inputs within the model while a data model will make use of connections (for example an Application Programming Interface (‘API’)) to pull in large amounts of data from external sources which can then be cleansed for use in the data model. The outputs of the data model can then be set to be much more dynamic than you would expect in a traditional financial model.
Why choose SolvIRR to develop your data model?
The depth of our financial modelling experience allows use to quickly identify, understand and resolve the challenges that large amounts of data can present, enabling data to be cleansed in a manner that facilitates meaningful outcomes and doesn’t impact the data integrity.
Financial model audits are largely performed for financiers seeking to mitigate the risk of errors in financial models and are generally a requirement of their approvals processes.
Initially this wasn’t a focus for SolvIRR but, after several direct requests for support in this area, we now provide financial model audit services.
Why choose SolvIRR for your financial model audit?
Our experience from the other side of the table, when our own financial models have been model audited, is that while the process provided the required view on the integrity of the model it didn’t provide any additional value to us or our client.
We have therefore sought to differentiate our financial model audit offering. Drawing on our experience as a model developer, we actively seek to add value for our clients which will last beyond the financial model audit process itself.
Much higher level than a financial model audit, and often scoped to target specific aspects of a financial model, a commercial review involves the review and stress testing of outputs with the aim of identify potential risks, errors and enhancement opportunities. Unlike a financial model audit, a commercial review doesn’t involve a line-by-line review of the model but some of the coding in the model would be investigated as part of the review process (for example, where outputs or movements on stress testing don’t align with expectations).
As such, a commercial review offers a cost-effective and relatively quick solution where added comfort around the outputs / integrity of a model is sought (and a financial model audit is not required).
Why choose SolvIRR for your commercial review?
This is the sort of work we thrive on and it’s perfectly aligned with our experience. We have developed, commercially reviewed, model audited or been the ‘go to problem solver’ for hundreds of financial models. This experience allows us to quickly identify issue areas in financial models.
In developing a scope of works, we work closely with our clients to understand the drivers for the commercial review and their key concerns (for example, they don’t trust a specific area of the model or want a focus on some complex modelling). This allows us to provide a scope tailored to these requirements and their budget.
